U4GM How Diablo 4 Runewords Work in Season 15
#1
Season 15, known as Season of Hell's Legacy, brings classic runewords into Diablo 4 with a system that rewards planning rather than random upgrades. Before you start chasing rare materials, it helps to understand how the Horadric Cube, blank Ancestral gear, and rune sequences work together. A well-prepared base item can save a lot of time, especially when you are comparing D4 items for a long-term build.

Build the Base Item First

The process starts with a white Ancestral item. Its original socket count does not decide the result, so do not waste time searching for a perfect socket layout. Remove every existing affix with the Occultist or the Horadric Cube until the item is completely plain. Then place it in the Cube with the required runes in the correct order. Once the transmutation is complete, the base gear becomes a Unique item with fixed core statistics inspired by earlier Diablo titles.

Choose a white Ancestral weapon, helm, shield, or chest piece.
Clear its affixes before placing it in the Cube.
Arrange the runes in the required sequence.
Repeat the craft if you want a stronger Greater Affix result.

Runewords Worth Chasing

Different runewords suit different stages of progression. Enigma is a powerful chest option because it gives every class access to a Teleport-style ability while adding useful defensive bonuses. Grief remains a strong pick for physical melee characters, using Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, and Ral. Call to Arms is popular with Barbarians and Druids because its skill bonuses improve shout-based setups. For levelling, Stealth and Lore are easier targets and offer immediate value without demanding the rarest materials.

Upgrade Beyond the First Craft

These Unique items are not locked into their first version. Make several copies to look for Greater Affixes, then use Masterworking to push a strong roll towards Mythic-level performance. The Occultist can also replace an unwanted affix through enchanting. Players may add sockets later and place Vessel of Hatred runes inside, creating layered effects that suit specialised builds. Spirit and Infinity are especially attractive for casters who need faster skill use, higher ranks, or stronger elemental pressure.

Farm With a Clear Target

Common and mid-tier runes can come from Nightmare Dungeons, while high-value materials such as Jah, Ber, and Lo need more focused farming. Whimsyshire is the standout destination in this season, provided you have the Liquid Rainbow needed to open the portal. Run it with a group when possible, keep a list of the runes your build needs, and use spare Diablo IV Gold for supporting expenses rather than rushing into an unfinished craft.
